Sealing Granite – How Often?

Home Maintenance – Sealing Stone Countertops

When you purchase a home with Natural Stone countertops, or remodel and choose Natural Stone, the first logical question is…

“How often should I Seal my Stone?”

The Answer is….IT DEPENDS

…It Depends on How Porous your Stone Is!

As pointed out by Lexi Klinkenberg of Redfin in her article on Home Maintenance, darker colored Granite tends to be less porous, and lighter colored granite tends to be MORE porous. The same guidelines generally apply to Marble Countertops as well.

See previous POST for a recap on how to Test your Stone, and a review of the different types of Sealers to use on Natural Stone.

Sealing Stone is NOT Difficult

Sealing natural stone is very easy….you only need a disposable paint brush, and some clean rags (white is best) or even a roll of Paper Towels.

  • Pour the Impregnating Sealer on a small portion of your stone countertops.
  • Allow the sealer to soak in for 15-minutes (don’t allow to dry)
  • Wipe off excess sealer with rags or paper towels
  • Buff polished stone to a clear shine, removing any streaks.
