Are Essential Oils good for Natural Stone Cleaning?

Are Essential Oils good for Natural Stone Cleaning?

Recently we came across a blog post by the leading Essential Oil distributor, Doterra®. This post (see LINK) offers several great points about cleaning natural stone including not using abrasive cleaners, and also NOT using acids like vinegar and citrus acids. Our concern is the recommendation of adding 15-drops of doTERRA OnGuard®, along with 1/2 cup isopropyl alcohol.

As we’ve noted in previous posts, we are always concerned about adding any oils to daily stone cleaning DIY recipe’s, and alcohol can degrade your existing sealers, particularly water-based sealers and impregnators.

Be careful using oils on Marble and soft stone

Marble, Onyx, Travertine, Sandstone, and Limestone are often soft and porous. Because of the porous nature of the stone, these types of stone can easily absorb the oils and over time, darken the stone.

Oils and grease are easily the worst enemies of natural stone, and are the most difficult stains to remove.

While we are not certain of the chemistry of the doTERRA essential oils, we recommend that you be careful using any type of essential oils in DIY stone cleaning formulas.

Unsure? Test before using!

If you want to be sure that your essential oil is safe to use on Natural Stone, find an inconspicuous area and pour 1-drop of oil on the stone and see if it makes the stone darker. If it does, we DO NOT recommend using the oil in a DIY cleaning formula.

Use a Proven Daily Stone Cleaner

For more than 40-Years, HMK Stone Soap has been trusted around the world as a Daily Stone Cleaner. It is also VERY economical. One liter of P324 Liquid Stone Soap will clean up to 8,000 square feet when diluted. We suggest adding one-capful of P324 per 16 ounces of filtered water, added to a spray bottle. To clean ALL STONE, simply spray and wipe dry with a cloth.

While using a Do-it-Yourself cleaner may seem like a simple formula, it may be a recipe for disaster due to the dubious ingredients in many DIY formulas. Oils and Alcohol can damage sensitive stone surfaces.

Use your essential oils for amazing Aroma Therapy, but we urge you to use a Professional Grade Stone Cleaner (like HMK P324 Stone Soap) for your daily cleaning of Granite and Marble countertops.
